modern large kent contemporary garden design

Cobham Manor Hall.

KENT, UK

An unusual residential garden with industrial buildings forming two of the boundaries, creating a difficult brief to make the garden feel like a contemporary space the clients family can relax into.

A problem solved by bringing the focus away from the edges of the garden and using materials that pick up on the industrial textures to blend the garden into the backdrop. Creating a welcoming plant rich garden in a previously under used space.

Scale is important so the space doesn’t get lost in the vastness of the buildings, so bold planting swathes maximising height use the buildings as a backdrop to play with shadows, making them a positive element of the garden. Open structural elements split the garden into defined spaces allowing the layers of the garden to bring refuge, depth and practicality.
